meal planning tips.

one of my friends asked me to share some of my meal planning tips with her last week. i thought i would share some with all of you too! when jeremy and i first got married, i would literally get anxious & stressed out on sunday nights trying to plan out my grocery list. i don't have a completely "fool proof" system, but here are a few strategies that have saved me headaches & minor melt downs...

// online resources
my good friend, netta, posts weekly meal plans with recipe ideas.
she links up with tons of other {mostly} moms on laura's site, organizing junkie. laura has menu planning print outs, recipe links, freezer cooking tutorials and so much more. an amazing resource.

mpm-1

// write it in something pretty
 because i declared that i am an artist, i chose something fun and colorful to write my weekly meal plan in. it makes it less painful.

// a running list.
if your family members say, "wow, this was an amazing meal!" i suggest taking note! if you work proactively, and keep a running list of meals that your family likes and didn't require all day in the kitchen, your meal plan will, in essence be done for you.

// keep your list in one place.
if you have a handy dandy notebook, then you can also keep a running list of items you will eventually need. {sometimes i might not necessarily need flour or sugar this week, but i need to remember to get it next month}. this keeps the random items floating around in your mind in one place.

// there's an app for that.
i've shared before the menu planning iphone app i use. it's a wonderful tool if you are a techie. i have to say, i resort back to pen and paper more often, but it has everything you need in one place, too.

// save some cash!
and best of all, menu planning will save you from just picking up random items off the shelves and ending up spending way more than you intended.

do you have any questions? anything i forgot to cover? feel free to leave them in the comments!

bits & pieces.

hello lovely songbird readers! hope your week has been delightful. i love sharing bits & pieces of my days with you. {plus it's fun to look back and have all of those "little" moments captured}. here are some moments of joy from this week:

one. spent labor day at an apple orchard. so fun!
two. turning over a new page on my calendar. ready to embrace the new season!
three. i wear "courage" around my wrist.
four. pattern mixing adds an artistic element to any outfit.
five. new art journal page. i love how it turned out. the purple is perfect.

linking up with lauren and carina!

thanks for following along as i document the beautiful "bits & pieces" of my life.

becoming.

the most important words we'll ever utter are those words we say to ourselves, about ourselves, when we're by ourselves. (the outlined text says "you're so beautiful")

who are you?
who do others say you are? your spouse? your family? friends? strangers?
who do you say you are?

not good enough. too old. too young. not as talented or creative as ____?!

a theme has come out in my art journaling lately. the theme of acceptance, even more than just tolerance, but celebration of one's self.

{it's so easy to magnify our flaws & shortcomings.}

but today i declare i am...
beautiful. creative. talented.

in fact, i'm an artist

this post written by a sweet, fellow creative soul captured what i've been feeling:
I am daring to call myself an artist. The thing I’ve never spoken out loud… I am screaming it now and it feels so very true & settles deeply into my bones.

there's always a risk involved in "becoming." it means moving into uncharted territory, opening ourselves up to new realms and identities. but "the pain caused by not growing is worse than growing pains."

what are you calling yourself today? maybe for the first time? speak it out. even if just a whisper at first, because what we say about ourselves, when we're by ourselves, matters.

pin approved!

{this background image was also a "pin" but i can't get the link to work. just fyi. i like to give credit where credit is due}

i was inspired by lindsay to share some of the ideas from pinterest that i've tried and liked! i know that people have their varying opinions about pinterest, but i feel the original intent was to share ideas & provide inspiration to actually try. here are some of my most recent projects that were {mostly} successful:

tape painting.
Tape painting. YES!!!! SO gonna try this!
pinned here.

this was a surprisingly speedy process. it looks much more complicated than it is. i just used regular scotch tape, and picked a completely random design. (i think it looks so impressive for how easy it was). i touched up a few places with white paint afterwords, but it only took me about 30 minutes from start to finish!

my version:

coffee body scrub.
coffeebodyscrub DIY: Coffee Body Scrub
pinned here.

this was amazing!! don't throw away your coffee grounds. it's a great consistency for a body scrub! my one tip--> lather up with the scrub while the water is off in the shower and then rinse WELL. it's quite messy, but smells great & leaves your skin silky smooth!

tshirt head wrap.

pinned here.

what a great way to re-use an old tshirt or tank top! only a few steps and you have a comfy headwrap! (isn't mandy adorable?)

i made two, one in grey and this one:

you can follow me on pinterest here.

have you tried any 'pins' lately?

hope you enjoy your holiday weekend! <3

bits & pieces.

i'm excited to start a new feature on style of a songbird, called bits & pieces. i have been so struck by this quote lately:

i want to document some of those "little things" throughout my week that in the end, add up to be the "big things." i'm linking up with lauren and carina to highlight five moments {or bits & pieces} of life that i am grateful for:

one. enjoying a "just right" cup of coffee in my favorite new ikea chair.
two. so much *love* inside this envelope full of treasures to incorporate for my art journal from a dear friend.
three. not too many things that can make a day better than a fresh pedicure.
four. "i create love that spirals through me and dances with joy." art journal page inspired by hannah.
five. date night with my love.

a punk, a pumpkin and a peanut

have a beautiful weekend! <3
