kindness changes things.

Come alive - Print

i love when a common theme shows up in my life & other blog posts i read. this week, it happens to be about the kindness of strangers. ashley shares her story here and jessica retells a moment that lifted her spirits here

my "moment" happened in the food court of a mall.

as i was throwing away my greasy leftovers, a beautiful woman came up to me and said, "i just love your short hair! and how you are wearing that headband. they just don't look right on me. i cut all my hair off recently and am still trying to figure out how to style it."

"it's funny," i said, "i was totally admiring yours from across the room too. your bangs are perfect."

her eyes lit up! "i cut them myself!" she exclaimed.

Kindness Matters - Print

a simple compliment sparked a confidence in both of us. i really believe there is a sisterhood of those with short hair. you can sometimes feel lonely in a room full of women with long, flowing locks. it may seem like such a short exchange between us, but it was like instantly, my spirit was lifted. we both recognized beauty in each other and all it took was the boldness to speak it out.

Kindness Changes Everything - Print

a compliment costs us nothing but a few breaths. but three words: "you are beautiful" can mean more than you could imagine.  a simple, seemingly inconsequential compliment can alter the course of someone's day, week or even life. and in some cases, when we least expect it, it can mean the most. like jessica's late night walk.

so today, i'm challenging you (& me) to recognize {inner and outer} beauty and speak it {type it} out. it could make all the difference in the world.

so to the lady in the mall who chopped your hair off and cut your own bangs, thanks for being bold enough to say hello in the food court. it wasn't just your hair that's beautiful, but your heart.

mint condition.

hello to all my new followers (and readers). i found out this weekend that some of my new friends here in connecticut are following along on my little blog adventure here at style of a songbird. and i'm so grateful.

did you know you can follow/subscribe to style of a songbird through email, google reader or bloglovin to receive all my posts directly?! (just see the right sidebar for links). also, be sure to "like" my facebook page here to receive inspiration/tips/updates throughout the week as well.

thank you to each and everyone of you for supporting my blog through reading, following, commenting. i truly don't take it for granted! <3

do you have a favorite scent? i love laundry right out of the dryer, my husband's cologne, freshly baked bread/cookies, and last but not least, mint anything. just the other day, i was drawn into a store with the scent of peppermint oil wafting through the air. mmm...
i have always been a "mint" girl. i love peppermint tea, body scrub, candles, you name it! i know i'm a little behind on the mint green trend as far as clothing and decor, but here are a few of my favorite mint finds:

mint condition

one // peppermint oil. i've recently jumped on the essential oil band wagon, and i'm so glad i did. i mostly use peppermint oil to soothe headaches (rub a few drops on your temples), breathe it in for relaxation (rub a small amount under your nose and take deep breaths) and for massage oil (add a few drops to coconut oil. <---my husband thanks me). you can use peppermint oil to flavor your coffee too!

two // mentha lip shine. this has been my staple lip product for years and years. you can find it online or at bath and body works. it has the best mint flavor, tingles as soon as you apply and provides amazing shine! it freshens your breath at the same time. plus, bath and body works almost always has a buy 2 get 1 free deal on these. at $5.00 a piece, you can't not afford to pick these up!

three // mint statement necklace. this necklace from forever 21 would be the perfect accent to a neutral ensemble. and for under $7 bucks, it's the perfect price too!

four // essie polish in mint candy. as most of you know, i am a die hard shellac fan, but this mint polish is so pretty.

five // pureology hydtrate shampoo and conditioner. i seriously look forward to washing my hair because of this stuff. the hydrate line is super moisturizing so it's great for color treated or dry hair. it smells amazing and tingles your scalp. i highly suggest you at least try this shampoo and conditioner in travel size---you'll be sold. i promise.

have a great week, everyone!

four years.

August 2, 2008 was the first day of the rest of my life. the day that i become a Simpson and married my the love of my life, my babe, my hot husband, jeremy. so much has happened in our four years of marriage: four different homes, a handful of jobs, two degrees, tons of trips, and so many memories.

since we are celebrating four years of marriage, i thought i would share four things i love and appreciate about my boo.

four // his integrity.
i have seen jeremy in some high stress situations. regardless of what he faces, he is faithful, dependable and honest. jeremy can be trusted. he leads with courage and conviction.

three // his sensitive and compassionate heart.
jeremy is one of the most generous people i've ever known. he loves with his whole heart, isn't afraid to cry and would give anyone the shirt off his back. one of the most practical ways i see this embodied in jeremy is that he is a kid and pet magnet. babies adore him! and dogs always want to sit by my j. :)

two // his sense of humor.
jeremy is the life of any party. he makes life fun everyday. and he often laughs until he cries.

one // his creativity.
jeremy is an amazing musician, singer and songwriter. he could have his own show on HGTV {seriously}. i love being married to an artistic man!

thank you for loving me, providing for me, encouraging and believing in me, spoling, and challenging me.

i love you, jeremy!

how pinteresting // july edition.

i've condensed my pinterest-ing posts down to once a month. here are my favorite july pins! enjoy!

the solution to clothes ending up on your closet floor...
Clothes keep slipping off plastic hangers? Use a hot glue gun to apply a zig zag pattern on the arms of your plastic hangers to prevent all your wide-necked shirts from falling off. Works like a charm!
